The Best Films of 2015

We're halfway through the second decade of the 21st century and cinema is very much going through a gamechanging transition. Avid TV viewers would be well aware that prestige television has stepped into narrative arenas that film used to hold monopoly over.

The Best Films of 2014

It's that time again when the subjective becomes objective, when arguments over the terms "favourite" and "best" reign, and a year is looked back on. 2014 was a sensational year for film and we come away with several titles that will be remembered for years to come. If there are titles you think I have missed when you skim my list then rest assured, I have seen the movie you are thinking of and I didn't like it at all. Don't worry, it's ok to enjoy average movies but [insert title here] is just not very good at all.

Let's go!

Top Ten Films Of 2013

Another year, another list.

As Hollywood descended into a suicidal cycle of remakes, sequels and films about the apocalypse we can take a deep breath at the end of 2013 and see a lot of hope for the future. 2013 was a banner year for television - possibly the greatest ever - and as filmmakers moved to the smaller screen there was a momentary concern that feature filmmaking was in trouble. If the 19 films I've listed below are any indiciation then we have nothing to worry about, for cinema is just as innovative, experimental and challenging as ever.

Top Ten Films of 2012

Here we are again. At the end of another year. A year that inevitably will be described as the best/worst/middling year ever by the hyperbolic internet machine. All I can say is that for me 2012 was a sensational year of film watching. It was the most interesting and successful year of film since maybe <insert random year here>.

Ten Great Films You May Never Have Heard Of

There has been a lot of films made over the last 100 years. Many of them have been not so good and understandably forgotten but many have slipped through the cracks for reasons that are much less clear. Some of these films I am listing may not be that readily accessible but make a note, file the title in the back of your mind because at some point you may come across them. My shortlist for this piece was much longer than 10 films so there may very well be a part two coming soon.

The Ten Best Films of 2010

2010 was a very good year for film. Not a great year but a damn good one which delivered plenty of really interesting films, several of which will definitely be remembered for years to come. The only things I feel worth noting before we jump into it is that there are a couple of titles that I haven't seen yet but most aren't getting released in Australia till January so I don't feel so bad neglecting them here.

The Ten Worst Films of 2010

2010 was a good year for film. Not one of the best in recent memory but a very good year nonetheless. On the other hand, 2010 can lay claim to birthing some of the worst films in recent memory. In that regard, this worst list contains some pretty, pretty bad stuff.

The Top Ten Music Videos of 2010

I've long been a fan of music videos. At best they can be a kind of pop culture equivalent to the avant garde short film. 2010 was a very good year for music videos. While the attention grabbing viral video flood of previous years was still present we also were treated to some absolutely beautiful work incorporating some truly experimental and creative concepts.
